What happens to girls who never grow strong

What happens to girls who never grow strong
Trees not hardened but rotting away
Beauty dissolving with pain, arid and stripped of music
What happens to women who need men to kiss them
Fool them into reassurance
They're still lovely, still beautiful
And it does not matter if they're ghost-images
Of their mothers who forgot to shout
Or sisters who could never be tired
What happens to people who never quieten their minds
Gritty dirt clogging every channel in their brains
Sweet radio static a dream
Skilled at muffling all screams
What happens to us who can't roll their mouths into confident spells
Us who are selfish sufferers
You who is cruel to yourself and everyone you love
Me who is everything you ask me not to be
What happens at the end?
Can we not bargain?
Dry kisses for you in a collage of lies
That's all I can offer for now
Until I know what happens at the end
Until you tell me
How to live with my pain.

Apart

Violent colours dancing on your face
I watch from afar
I look away
Violent colours stabbing my heart

The leaves are swaying
Hair strands gripped on to your sweaty face
I remember your anecdotes
I remember you doted on me
I remember it all

How did I have no eyes back then?
The poets and singers lament my foolishness
He is standing next to you
My stomach is upset with rage
As he removes the silk strands from your face

I mourn our days
Sunlight leaking through leaves
My once-negligent heart now twisting and turning
Oh what I wouldn’t give now
To have it all back

I look at my palms and I look at your face
You and your new friend begin to move away
I am empty with a shell for a heart,
Cursing myself for letting you go
Wondering about how could I not know
I cannot bear staying apart.

Oh woman

Don’t be a metaphor-
“A flower trying it’s hardest to bloom
In the shattered cement ruins”
Be what you are
A woman of flesh and blood
Warring with words.
Your intangible insecurities, tangible tears
Your bleeding womb, intellectual fears
The friction of trying to transgress spheres
Makes you who you are.
Language may turn into metaphor
Or you can harden it into goals
In a void devoid of meaning.
What does it mean, to be feminine?
